LECTURES
Week 01 (22/09/2025)

During this week's lecture, Mr Vinod spoke to us on what to expect this semester. Here are some of my notes:
  • Major Project is consultation-based. In the first few weeks, come to class and propose your topics, finalised by Week 03. Something solid, a workable proposal following the guidelines. Then, the topic will lead to a mentor that handles your specialisation. Then, we will need to set consultations weekly. Not necessarily on class timing.
  • Change of topic not advisable from Week 05 onwards. After this, it's hard to excel.
  • Ensure you meet the rubrics in order to get a good mark. Not necessarily; if you do a lot, it means you will get an A.
  • Pathways:
    • Find any topic, start from scratch. But that topic MUST have one or more of:
      • Purpose (What?)
      • Who benefits from this? (Who?)
      • What problems are you solving?

PROJECT PROGRESSION
Week 01 (22/09/2025)
This week was mostly about refining my slides so they could clearly communicate and support my ideas. During my internship and semester break, I took some time to reflect on the kind of work I want to pursue, which really helped me kickstart this project with a clearer direction. For every concept I proposed, I made sure to explain why it was worth exploring, supporting it with small bits of research and my own critical thinking. I also began doing more visual research and created a Pinterest moodboard to collect designs and references that inspire me and help shape the overall direction.

Week 02 (22/09/2025)
In Week 2, the focus is on ideation and project direction. Based on feedback from Mr Asrizal, I explored gaps in the current matcha market and developed the concept of Midoriya as a brand that bridges wellness and beauty, including instant matcha collagen drinks and skincare products. Following Mr Vinod’s feedback, I began clearly defining the scope of the project, identifying what deliverables would be produced and how the brand would be positioned.

Week 03 (06/10/2025)
This week focused on clarifying the project deliverables and refining the overall proposal. I outlined all core products, including the Matcha Collagen Drink, Lip Balm, Facial Wash, and Face Toner, and specified how the brand would be applied across both digital and physical platforms. I also improved title alignment and consistency while adding clearer explanations for each deliverable to strengthen communication and narrative clarity.

In addition, I refined the brand identity direction, with particular emphasis on the logo. I explored the development of a favicon, or brand icon, for use across social media and packaging. Based on feedback, I enhanced slide layout readability, created a clearer introductory slide explaining the project’s scope and purpose, and adjusted the logo by increasing letter spacing to ensure legibility at smaller sizes.

Week 04 (13/10/2025)
This week focused on strengthening the project introduction and core identity system. I revised the introductory slides to more clearly communicate the project intent within the first few pages and began fully developing the visual identity, including logo refinements, typography, and foundational brand elements, before moving into applications.

Week 05 (20/10/2025)
Week 5 was a Diwali national holiday, with no formal supervision. During this period, I continued light independent refinement of existing designs and prepared assets for upcoming identity development stages.

Week 06 (27/10/2025)
In Week 6, I focused on logo system development. I created a favicon derived from the main logo for consistent application across digital platforms and packaging. I also began writing a logo rationale, explaining the design decisions, symbolism, and how the logo supports Midoriya’s premium wellness positioning.

Week 07 (03/11/2025)
This week emphasised logo and packaging refinement. I enhanced the letter “O” in the logo to create a stronger visual anchor and connection to the favicon. For packaging, I explored solid and gradient colour applications instead of minimalist photography to improve print consistency and maintain a clean, professional aesthetic.

Week 08 (10/11/2025)
In Week 8, I refined the colour palette and readability. Based on feedback, I adjusted background and text colours to ensure stronger contrast, improved legibility of product names, and experimented with colour panels for each product variant. I also reassessed the overall palette to create a fresher, greener, and more vibrant brand feel.

Week 09 (17/11/2025)
This week focused on print readiness and visual hierarchy. I refined headline colours to better align with the overall palette, improved panel separation, and cleaned up label layouts. I also prepared a test print of all four packaging designs on a single sheet to evaluate real-life colour accuracy, readability, and overall cohesion.

Week 10 (24/11/2025)
In Week 10, I focused on making the design feel more dynamic and expressive by further refining the overall visual approach. I reduced the heavy use of gradients and instead strengthened the design through clearer typography, stronger contrast, and a more structured visual hierarchy. Inspired by skincare brands such as Tatcha and Skintific, I introduced bolder typographic treatments and added more visual energy to the layouts. This helped the design better reflect MIDORIYA’s brand personality while still maintaining a clean, calm, and refined aesthetic. During this week, I also began creating the brand collaterals, applying the updated visual direction across different materials to ensure consistency and cohesion.

Week 11 (01/12/2025)
This week involved refining packaging details for a premium finish. I reviewed and simplified patterned elements that conflicted with the clean, minimalist aesthetic. By reducing or removing unnecessary patterns, I ensured greater cohesion between colour, layout, and texture, reinforcing Midoriya’s premium and professional image. After finalising the packaging design, I then proceeded with preparing the final print-ready files to ensure the packaging was ready for the final print.

Week 12 (08/12/2025)
In Week 12, the focus shifted toward promotion and brand activation. During this stage, I planned and designed three promotional advertisements and worked on a range of merchandise, including animating the MIDORIYA logo. I was also encouraged to explore a booth mock-up to better visualise the brand’s physical presence. Alongside this, I developed promotional applications for Instagram and the website to ensure the brand experience felt cohesive across both digital and physical touchpoints.

Week 13 (15/12/2025)
This week was all about final refinements and bringing everything together. I spent time polishing the promotional visuals and digital layouts to make sure everything feels consistent across all MIDORIYA brand touchpoints. I also started refining the brand identity slides, ensuring that every outcome clearly aligns with the original objectives and incorporates the feedback received, so the overall presentation feels cohesive and well-resolved.

Week 14 (28/12/2025)
In the final week, I focus on wrapping up the final submission and documentation. This includes putting together all the final designs, polishing the presentation boards, and making sure the rationale and process are clearly explained. I also prepare for assessment by showing the project’s overall journey, final outcomes, and how the work reflects the feedback given by my supervisors.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION
I would definitely say that my Major Project, Midoriya, has been a long and emotionally intense journey. It was one filled with moments of pressure, doubt, and growth. While I knew from the beginning that this project would be challenging, I did not expect how much it would push me creatively and mentally. Throughout the semester, I surprised myself with how much I was able to develop independently, from brand identity and packaging to promotional materials, motion elements, and digital applications. Seeing Midoriya grow from a simple concept into a fully realised beauty and wellness brand made the stress feel worthwhile.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was managing the scope of the project while ensuring consistency across all mediums. As a graphic design student, it was demanding to balance concept development, visual identity, packaging design, promotional ads, animations, and website layouts all at once. However, through continuous feedback from my supervisors, I learnt the importance of refining ideas rather than overcomplicating them. This process taught me how crucial clarity, hierarchy, and purpose are in branding, especially when positioning a product as premium and trustworthy.

I also gained valuable experience in understanding the realities of print production. Adjusting colour palettes, improving readability, and preparing test prints helped me realise that design does not stop on screen. While this process involved a lot of trial and error, it strengthened my awareness of how design choices translate into physical outcomes. My previous exposure to publishing design and packaging modules helped guide me through this stage, even though it was still stressful at times.

Additionally, I am grateful that I had the opportunity to complete my internship before undertaking this module. The practical skills I gained, particularly in Adobe software, layout systems, and social media design, played a significant role in shaping the quality of my final outcomes. The experience gave me more confidence in my technical abilities and allowed me to work more efficiently under pressure.

Overall, this semester has been a whirlwind of emotions. There were moments where I felt overwhelmed and questioned my decisions, but those moments also pushed me to become more resilient and disciplined. Despite the stress and setbacks, this project has strengthened me as a designer and taught me valuable lessons in time management, adaptability, and perseverance. Completing Midoriya has not only marked the end of my final year project but also a meaningful milestone in my growth as a graphic designer.
