LECTURES
Week 4 | Composition
- A design need to have a focal point in order to convey the message.
- The viewer first reach the eye-contact and then have a chance to be manipulate by the designer by looking at the shapes then followed by the text (hierarchy).
- Balance the elements, such as having the same color scheme.
- Having negative space in order the design having some room to breathe.
- Rule of thirds: create conversation between subject and background.
- Golden ratio: it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Research 01:
1 a) What is a poster design?
Poster design is a visual communication tool that uses graphic design and typography in order to spread a message or advertise an idea, product or service. It is a type of advertisement that seeks to pique the interest and attention of the audience through eye-catching images, assertive typography and a compelling message. A well-designed poster need to be aesthetically pleasing, informative and easy to comprehend. It should successfully communicate the facts or message it wants to share in a way that appeals to the intended audience.
b) What is a good poster design?
Good poster design is subjective and is all influence by the intended purpose, audience and message of the poster. However, some fundamental guidelines for effective poster design include:
- A clear and concise message that is simple to understand at a glance should be portrayed by the poster.
- Eye-catching graphics: The poster can be made to stand out by using vibrant colors, attractive imagery and inventive text.
- Readability: The poster should be simple yo read, with legible type in an audience and message appropriate size and style.
c) What is a photographic poster? What is an illustrated poster?
A photographic poster is one that includes a single photograph or a collection of photographs. The images in the poster can be in color or black and white. They also can be used to convey a message, advertise a service or offer details. Posters with photographs can be used for advertising, art exhibits or political campaigns. Contrarily, an illustrated poster is one that uses hand-drawn or digital drawings instead of photographs. The illustrations can convey a message or deliver information in a variety of ways, including cartoon, abstract or realistic forms. Illustrated posters can be used in a variety of settings, such as art prints, educational or advertising usage.

2 a) What is Double Exposure?
Double exposure is a photographic technique that involves exposing a single frame of film or a digital sensor twice in order to produce a single image that incorporates two or more distinct scenes. With this method, the first exposure is made, and the same frame is subsequently exposed a second time, in which this time with a different scene, superimposing the two photographs. As the two or more images combine to form a new, composite image, the outcome can have a surreal or dreamy quality. Double exposure can be produced using film or digital cameras as well as with Photoshop compatible software.
b) What is Digital Double Exposure?
Digital Double Exposure is techniques which imitates the analogue double exposure method in a digital form. It is produced by stacking two or more photos on top of each other using photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop, as opposed to exposing a single frame of film or a digital sensor twice. In digital double exposure, the first image is opened in the editing software, and a second image is layered on top of it with the opacity adjusted to blend the two images together. Additional photos can be added, and the process can be continued until a composite image is produced.

Week 5 | Double Exposure
- During this week, we learned about double exposure photography, which involves combining many photographs. Some of the skills that were introduced are:
- Using the tilt-shift effect
- Creating a fake reflection
- Experimenting with simple portraits and texture
- Working with a silhouette

Week 6 | Digital Photography
- During this week, we learned about the fundamentals of photography and the various camera settings.
- Exposure: The amount of light which reaches the camera sensor or film.
- Iris (Aperture): To control the flow of light entering the lens. It is measured by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32. The lower the f-number the larger the lens opening.
- Shutter: It is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film. Shutter speed is measured in seconds: 1/1000s, 1/500s, 1/250s, 1/125s, 1/60s, 1/30s, 1/15s, 1/8s, 1/4s, 1/2s, 1s, 2s, 3s...
- ISO: Originally referred to the sensitivity of film - it's "light gathering" ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity-the signal gain-of the camera's sensor. The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400, 640, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400... The lower the number of ISO, the less sensitive the camera is to light and the finer the grain.
- Focal Length: It is the measurement (in mm) from the optical centre of a camera to the camera's sensor. The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa.
- Depth of field: The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus. The smaller the aperture being use, the greater the depth of field.

INSTRUCTION
(A) Double Exposure
For the creation of my own double exposure photo, I followed the video tutorial given during week 5 tutorials. Firstly, I took a picture of myself using my phone and after getting an image that I am satisfied with, I directly move on and apply the double exposure skills using Adobe Photoshop. The idea that I wanted to portray for this task is to show the natural side of me and how much I appreciate the natures.

(B) Digital Poster Design
Before directly creating the poster using Photoshop, we were advised to do research and sketches on the idea that we wanted to portray based on the chosen SDG topic. I did two poster sketches which can be seen from the images below:

After receiving some feedbacks from Mr. Martin, I decided to choose 'Water is Life' (poster sketch #1) as my final poster idea. He likes the idea, however I do still need to do some adjustment on the final digital poster.
Final Outcome
 |
Fig 4.1 Poster Final Outcome | JPEG Format (27.05.2023) |
Artwork title: Water is Life
Artist Statement: My artwork attempts to raise awareness about the critical global need for clean water and sanitation. As an artist, I believe it is my obligation to use my skills to bring attention on significant issues affecting people's health and well-being. I hope that my artwork will inspire people to become advocates for clean water and sanitation, while also making them to take action on making differences in their communities and around the world. As can be seen from my poster, it uses bright colors and vivid imagery in order to grab the viewer's attention and convey the importance of this subject. I attempt to make the message understandable and relatable to a wide audience by employing basic and direct word choices. In conclusion, I believe that everyone has the right to have access to clean water and sanitation, hence it is our common responsibility to make this a reality.
FEEDBACK
(a) Double Exposure
(b) Digital Poster Design
- Mr. Martin suggested to stick to the moldboard and have more originality.
REFLECTION
I enjoyed the process of generating my double exposure portrait while working on this project. I love the idea in which I can express myself through the portrait by using various components in Adobe Photoshop. Regarding the digital poster design, I found it to be challenging to come up with an idea that is original and creative. I also have noticed that when working on this project, I work best through trial and error as I tend to come up with new ideas within the process. Despite the fact that I am familiar with using Photoshop, I was able to improve my skills while working on this Project 2.
