Project 2 Shooting Practice & Editing
INSTRUCTION
PROJECT 2A | SILENT
Specification:
- Students will practice shooting with DSLR or smartphone, online/offline editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Audition.
- Regarding the editing, please do not follow the order of the storyboard; try something different.
1 | Shooting Process
For this project, I got assigned as an assistant director 2, and it was
a pretty crucial role which includes:
- tracking daily progress against the filming production schedule
- arranging logistics
- preparing daily call sheets
- checking cast and crew
- maintaining order on the set
Before starting with the camerawork for the 'SILENT' project, we started by
editing the storyboard template and added in crucial details for the filming
process, including dialogue and estimated timeframes for each scene. This
adjustment was to ensure that we stayed on track with our schedule.

I also decided to create a schedule breakdown for the shoot as to make sure
that we have enough time to shoot the whole scenes. We were given four hours
of class time to finish the whole shooting.

In the fifth week, we went ahead with the production shoot, and it was
actually quite exhausting. However, I did also have some fun and enjoy the
overall experience, as it was my first time to film video using professional
equipments.
2| Editing Process
After getting all the video and audio clips up on my laptop, I went through
each one carefully, and making sure to label them properly. I have to admit
that I was still not sure on what kind of trailer concept that I'm going to
apply for this project, so I did some online research. Once I had a clearer
idea, I started to edit both audio and video clips on Adobe Premiere
Pro.
During Week 6, we learned about color grading, which turns out to be really
useful than what I had in mind.

I made scene 2 to have darker color grade compared to the other clips, as I
wanted the scene 2 clips to be viewed as a 'reminiscence of old memories' or
also known as flashbacks.

PROJECT 2B | SELF-TITLED TIKTOK

Before filming, I had to plan out about how each shot is going to be set up
and the composition. I opted for wide and close-up shots in order to produce a
more personal feel.
For this assignment, we were given two choices between creating an Instagram
reel or TikTok. I chose to create a TikTok video as I am more familiar with
it. The theme for this project is "Self-Titled", which means that it needs to
portray our personality or even showing what we personally like to do. We were
also given the creative freedom on the style of the video shots.

During the editing process, I was struggling to shorten the duration of the video shots that I took. I filmed too much shots, and I was kind of confused on which one to cut off. Nonetheless, I managed to cut off some shots and made the final into a 2 minutes TikTok video.
After finishing with the cuts, I continued with adjusting the color as some shots have different lightning as they were taken in several places. I also decided to add some graphic elements in order to create a visual appeal in my video.

REFLECTION
Getting involved in this project was truly a fascinating experience. While I
had a prior experience with creating storyboards, this was my first time
diving into the real-word shooting production. One significant takeaway from
this experience was a deepened understanding and appreciation for the
intricacies of camerawork. Bringing a scene to life involved a comprehensive
process, including conceptualizing the shot, capturing references images,
documenting settings, setting up for test shots, adjusting the final shot,
incorporating sound, and of course, color grading. Beyond these technical
aspects, what stood out was how the project guided me through each step. This
systematic approach significantly contributed to its effectiveness in
fulfilling my goal. I plan to incorporate this framework into my future
shooting endeavors as it will undoubtedly elevate the overall production value
of my work.
