A. Contrast
|
Figure 1.1: Final Design
Title: Geos
Medium: Digital Design
Size: 50 x 50 cm
Intention: This artwork is to show the contrasting
elements through the role of colors and shapes. The rectangular
and circular shapes overlap each other, which created a
contradiction. The title is influenced by the geometric shapes
that can be found in the design.
|
B. Emphasis |
Figure 1.2: Final Design
Title: Hidden Agony Medium: Digital Design Size: 50 x 70 cm Intention: This artwork was the representation of oppression that has been felt by the Gen Z living in the recent society. The amount of harsh critics that were unconsciously drawn towards individuals have led to agony. Without realizing it, people have blurted out their cruel opinions without knowing the hysterical outcomes that resulted from the emergence of depression. |
C. Repetition |
Figure 1.3: Final Design
Title: Where They Bloom Medium: Digital Design Size: 50 x 60 cm Intention: This artwork shows a repetitive pattern of a flower known as "Aster". There are variety of bright colors involved in here as to show a lively environment as well as to enhance the beauty of the pattern. |
D. Movement |
Figure 1.4: Final Design
Title: Linkage of Vulnerability Medium: Acrylic Pouring Size: 50 x 60 cm Intention: This artwork is an abstract acrylic pouring, reminiscent of the haunting memories. The painting depicts the dark past slowly flowing into the light. There will be a contrast in color lightness, with the 'lighter' color representing the positive matter that will arise, and the 'darker' color representing the gloomy action that tormented the individual. |
E. Symbol |
Figure 1.5: Final Design
Title: OBJECTS Medium: Digital Design Size: 50 x 70 cm Intention: Each item depicted in the artwork has a deep significance that adds to the overall idea of the negative aspects of social media and "netizens." Based on actual objects, each illustration was drawn digitally. |
Project 1: Self-Portrait | Week 5 - Week 7 (14.10.2022 - 28.10.2022)
|
Figure 2.1 Blue Cries |
Title: Blue Cries
Medium: Digital Photoshop and Drawing
Design Concept: This piece portrays the hidden feelings that were burdened down inside me. The picture was taken directly using the phone camera. I use myself as the subject in order to portray the sadness of moving to a new country, leaving behind my hometown and school. An influence of digital drawing is included to draw the things and flow of tears coming from my eyes that represent the mixture of emotions that have been held back and stayed hidden from me.
|
Figure 3.1: Rapid Changes |
Title: Rapid ChangesMedium: Digital Design
Design concept: This artwork portrays my interpretation of Malaysia. This is because I started to move here to university and I wanted to show my journey on the rapid changes. There is actually a hidden symbolization on the cable colors: the white cable cars symbolize the positivity of my journey in this unfamiliar country while the red cable cars symbolize the drawbacks that I experience when living and adapting in this new environment.

Figure 4.1 Final Design |
Title: Divergence
Medium: Digital Illustration
Design Rationale: This illustration is the showcase of the current issue on inequalities. As a result of Norman Rockwell's influence, this piece of art features comparable walking gestures to the Marshall, or in this case, a portrayal of a businessman, which is based on the notion that men are more likely than women to be able to secure a nice job.
REFLECTION
Throughout this design principles module, I have learned a lot about the field
of design, starting with its fundamental ideas and how I was able to express
myself creatively through the creation of my artworks. I study nine design
principles throughout the first few weeks by watching the provided lecture
videos. The design principles are thoroughly explained and illustrated in each
video, which helps me decide what to emphasise when producing an artwork.
After learning about design principles and creating five pieces of art, we are
assigned Project 1, a self-portrait in which we must creatively convey our
thoughts on the characteristics that define us as who we are. Then, in the
following week, we moved on to Project 2, which is about a sense of place. I
actually enjoyed this project the most as it gives me a chance to explore
Malaysia as we need to collect fresh photos reference before creating the
final artwork. I decided to portray Malaysia as my sense of place as I just
moved here recently to pursue university. For the last and final project, we
are required to conduct a visual analysis on the chosen artwork that discusses
about SGD10 or also known as 10 reduced inequalities. In this final project, I
chose to analyze a piece of art that raises the issue of social prejudice.
In terms of my art and research skills, I can see that I have gradually gotten
better as I complete each project assignment. I discovered that I prefer
creating artworks digitally because it is a faster process to accomplish this
while also having access to an infinite number of artistic features. Apart
from the fact that this module is being delivered online, which I appreciate
more because it gives me more flexibility in how I organise my time to
complete my tasks, almost nothing has changed in my learning process. Overall,
I found this module to be interesting to learn because it taught me useful
design principles and how to produce effective artwork. I believe that there
is nothing much that could be improved in this module as it has been
well-arranged for the students to be able to learn engagingly. However, a
group task can be utilized to allow the students to socialise with one another
while also sharing their creative ideas.
